Verso plans to temporarily idle 200,000 tons of annual production capacity at Androscoggin mill
(USA, Nov 01, 2016) Verso Corporation today announced plans to temporarily idle the No. 3 paper machine at its Androscoggin Mill in Jay, Maine, reducing annual coated paper production capacity by approximately 200,000 tons. Verso intends to implement this capacity reduction beginning in the first quarter of 2017.
The mill also will idle a digester and recovery boiler that support the No. 3 paper machine.

Russia: pulp and newsprint exports down in January-August 2016
(St Petersburg, Oct 28, 2016) In 2016, Russian export of logs, lumber, and plywood saw a positive trend. However, that did not happen to the country’s pulp and paper sector. In the first 8 months of the current year, Russian pulp and newsprint export reduced in value terms, says the foreign trade statistics published by the Russian Federal Customs Service.

Rottneros Starts Up Valmet-supplied Bleaching System in Sweden
(Sweden, Oct. 26, 2016) Valmet said that a new high consistency bleaching system that it supplied to Rottneros pulp mill in Sweden started up according to plan on September 19, 2016.
The start-up was smooth and the 48-hour test run was approved, Valmet added.

Brazilian pulp exports increased by 12.7% in January- July
(Sao Paulo, Brazil, Nov. 01, 2016) The planted tree industry of Brazil continues to stand out due to its important contribution to the country’s balance of trade surplus. From January through July 2016, the sector recorded a $ 3.8 billion surplus, a 7.2% growth year-over-year. India: JK Paper offers to buyout two Bilt units
(New Delhi, Oct. 26, 2016) In a BSE filing, Ballarpur Industries said ‘material subsidiary of the company, viz. BILT Graphic Paper Products (BGPPL) has received a tentative offer and draft term sheet for acquisition of its Ballarpur unit and Ashti unit of BGPPL from JK Paper (JKPL).

Total European Shipments of Graphic Papers in August Increased 1.5%
(Brussels, Oct. 25, 2016) EURO-GRAPH, the European Association of Graphic Paper Producers, published its August 2016 statistics of the European Graphic Papers Industry, which showed total shipments of graphic papers in August were 2,795,000 tonnes, up 1.5% or 41,000 tonnes versus August 2015.
Graphic Paper grades include: Newsprint, SC-Magazine, Coated Mechanical Reels, Uncoated Mechanical Reels, Coated Woodfree and Uncoated Woodfree.

R&D: ‘Nuisance’ polymer becomes biomass breakthrough
(Switzerland, Oct. 24, 2016) A team of scientists at Swiss research institution École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) have found a way to turn the biomass waste polymer -- lignin -- into a source of biofuel.
By adding formaldehyde to the lignin 'waste', which is described as a "nuisance", the scientists claim to be able to convert up to 80% of it into valuable molecules for biofuel and plastics.
